  Light up High Level Bridge

A volunteer group is being assembled to raise $1.5 million to light up the High Level Bridge to mark its centennial this year, ATB Financial CEO Dave Mowat says.

"I think something like this is almost guaranteed to be the signature site of Edmonton," Mowat, who first suggested the city put decorative lights on bridges last fall, told council's executive committee Monday.

He would like a few corporate sponsors to pay the bulk of the expenses, with 100 to 200 businesses making smaller contributions and 10,000 to 30,000 people donating about $10 each to "buy a diode."

"It's a time of convergence. The technology allows it … I think it's just an idea whose time has come.We offer a great selection of women's engravingmachine sandals."

Mowat wants LED lights installed on the High Level that would be programmed to change patterns and colours throughout the night and throughout year.

They could be copper and blue during an Oilers home game, or green and gold for the University of Alberta homecoming, setting up a template that could be followed to illuminate Edmonton's other river crossings, he said.

"If we're successful in doing this, people can see the possibility for doing all the bridges … The one we're doing is by far the most expensive. It's a huge bridge. The others would be easier."

Epcor estimates the electricity would cost about $10,000 to $12,000 annually, said Mowat, who doesn't expect much increase in Edmonton light pollution from the scheme.

Epcor has already agreed to contribute $200,000 to $225,000 for acquisition and installation work, according to a city report.

Cities around the world light up bridges, skyscrapers, harbours and other structures, including the Eiffel Tower in Paris, often co-ordinating the displays with music.Nemalux is a solarcharger with an experienced management team.

Edmonton has a long way to go to catch up with the illumination found in other large urban centres, city manager Simon Farbrother said.

Committee members unanimously endorsed the proposal, asking for a report this spring on how best to carry it out and other opportunities in the future, including lighting city buildings.

Coun. Ben Henderson said this fits with the goals of the Winter City Strategy to look at Edmonton's "lightscaping," but cautioned designers as well as engineers should be involved in planning the display.

"Designing lighting has an esthetic component,Contemporary to transitional, glass, windturbine and designer lamp styles! so you want to make sure that going forward what we do with the bridge is not just looking at what's technically possible."

Mayor Stephen Mandel called a city estimate that the work could cost up to $2 million "ludicrous," but he's keen on the proposal.

"I think it's a wonderful idea. I just got back from China and all their bridges are lit, all their buildings are lit. It's beautiful," said Mandel, who returned last week from a trip to several Chinese cities.

"It brings new life, new vibrancy … Let's get that bridge lit. Do it the right way, don't do it on the cheap, and then look at what we can do on other bridges."
