Philips has a strong background in lighting with many of its bulbs lighting up houses, buildings and roads. What challenges does Philips see in lighting?

A grand challenge we see is that the world likes to use energy, but energy is finite. Fossil fuel will not last forever and although Indonesia has large resources, a growing population will increase demand for lighting and other forms of energy. Already 20 percent of the world’s electricity is consumed by lighting, which wastes a lot of it through heat and inefficiency. The world will become a better place through energy efficient light-emitting diode (LED) lighting. The benefits of LED lamps is are that they last 50,000 hours, save energy by more than 50 percent and have a light quality that is warmer and more natural than incandescent.

Lighting is certainly our largest business in Indonesia although the highest growth is in healthcare and consumer healthcare products. Traditional incandescent lights are already being replaced by LED lights in offices and public places but the growth of the middle class has brought a higher demand for personal care products.

And what about the challenges you see in consumer healthcare?

To make sure that people have a life filled with health and well-being. I have already referred to the growing middle class and hence, more people who want to have a good life. We see a surge in consumption, but it is not right when more consumption results in bad eating habits that cause obesity. We find that by investing in products related to personal care, dental hygiene and food preparation, we can help people have a healthy life in a good way.
