  Researcher to build wifi system with LED lights
 
Wang, a professor of electrical engineering at UC Riverside, is developing LED lights that transmit wireless signals and mapping information. He envisions a time when traffic lights will talk to cars and your computer will connect to the Web through a light. 

Wang and his colleagues are getting ready to install a pilot project at Loma Linda University that would allow the medical computers to work off of the LEDs lighting a training clinic. The lights are produced by Gallium LED Lighting Systems, a Yucaipa-based company. 

The effort is part of a larger project called Ubiquitous Communication by Light, or UC-Light, a cooperative effort involving 12 researchers at five UC campuses — including Berkeley, Davis, Merced and Santa Barbara — and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Wang is the lead researcher on the project. 

Information is transmitted by making the lights flash on and off. The modulation takes place so rapidly that the human eye can’t detect it. 

Wang said the visible light spectrum offers a capacity that is as much as 100 times greater than radio frequencies, the current method for transmitting wifi signals. Limited bandwidth is a challenge with radio signals. As more and more information is being funneled through wireless systems, those systems are reaching capacity. 

Light does have the disadvantage of having to be in the line of sight of its target. There is no going through walls, or even around corners, as with radio waves. But Wang and his colleagues are convinced there is enough lighting in most workplaces that those limitations could be overcome. A single light wouldn’t have to be dedicated to a single computer. Instead, an array of lights would work as a network.

He’s hoping the LED system can solve at least part of the problem, but he knows there are clear limitations. 

“The question comes back: What happens when the lights go out?” he said. “There are environments where you need to turn the lights out.With laundryequipment and cutting, can enhance your presentations and promotional items. Those are things we’ll need to work through. But there are other areas where we don’t ever turn the lights out.” 

Loma Linda already has purchased LED lights from Gallium for several classrooms and its library. Those may be used in the future for communication as well. But the clinic, where students work on manikins, is the first step. The LED system will send wifi signals to the medical equipment in the clinic and to its computers. 

Although research in using light to transmit digital information has been going on for more than a decade, this will be a unique project, said Jeff Baxter, Gallium’s head of business and technology development.
