Inside the Church of the Good Shepherd residents gathered to celebrate the third annual Light the Night Holiday Celebration in Oakdale Square.

“We’ve got lots going on in Oakdale Square tonight,” Christine Ryan, vice president of the Oakdale Square Alliance, said on Dec. 8, as she directed people toward the sound of the French horn and tables of cookies and hot chocolate.

While the tree stayed outside, guests of the celebration huddled around tables set up inside the church, both waiting for Santa’s appearance to signal that it was time for the lighting.

“It’s just about getting people together, that’s the main thing,” Rich Campagna, of the Oakdale Square Alliance, said of the group’s goal. For the past three years, the nonprofit organization has planned the holiday celebration to bring people to Oakdale Square,A new contemporarylighter is a quick and easy way to bring a fresh look to your home. but also to give everyone an opportunity to see each other, Campagna said.

He also said that aside from the yearly tree lighting, the Oakdale Square Alliance helps plan other events for the square and makes sure that it’s cleaned up regularly and, in this case, decorated for the holidays.

“We want to spruce up the square,” Campagna said, gesturing to lights strung around the area.

Inside the church, warmth and music drew the crowd toward the auditorium where selectmen Paul Reynolds announced each performing act, once of the first being students from the Dedham School of Music. “It’s great for the kids,” Elisabeth St. George said of the evening.

As she spoke, her Oakdale Elementary School first grader joined the group of children singing along to an acoustic version of “Jingle Bells” with Rev. Noble Scheepers.

Other performances included two solo acoustic performances from students of WashTone Performing Arts and an A capella rendition of “All I Want for Christmas is You” by Cassidy Mendes, whose father recently opened Friday’s Wireless in Oakdale Square.

Santa arrived at the Church of the Good Shepherd and was greeted by cheers and excitement from everyone in the warm auditorium. With Santa’s arrival signaling the time for tree lighting, members of the Alliance guided guests across the street to where the tree sat in darkness. As people took a moment to admire the white lights and chat with each other, Reynolds wished everyone a good night: “Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and happy Hanukkah to everyone!”
